I am interested in heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and its potential role in ameliorating Alzheimer’s Disease(AD) phenotypes in Drosopholia melanogastor. In this model, a paneuronal promoter, elav, is utilized to express human Amyloid Precursor Protein (hAPP) and human Beta-site APP cleaving enzyme1 (hBACE1) to generate flies with neurodegenerative phenotypes. HSP70, besides its role of a chaperone for protein folding and trans-membrane transport, has also been supported to be involved in the proteolytic and apoptotic pathways. With HSP70’s diversification of protein interactions, over- expression may prove beneficial in our model and is assayed via behavioral and biochemical techniques.
